Hungary has secured a crucial agreement with the European Commission, unlocking billions of euros in previously withheld European Union funds by committing to a series of reforms. According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Hungary has initiated measures to address key concerns surrounding transparency, governance, and the management of EU funds. These reforms are set to bolster anti-corruption safeguards, enhance oversight mechanisms, and include Hungary’s participation in the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The agreement outlines a significant financial boost for Hungary, with funds earmarked for infrastructure, energy security, housing, transportation, and business development projects. As Hungary progresses with additional reforms, particularly those affecting higher education and academic governance, more funds could be released. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar confirmed that the agreement encompasses a total of €16.2 billion in EU funding, describing it as a substantial contribution to the country’s economic growth and investment strategy.
This deal not only provides financial relief but also facilitates the reintegration of Hungarian students into the Erasmus exchange program by the next academic year.
